MODALITY SERIES - Hot Stone
What are Hot Stones?
Hot Stones is a type of massage, either done full body or as an add-on. Most times the Hot Stones are basalt stones which are made from volcanic lava. They tend to be smooth and hold their heat for a long time. They cool from the outside in, so they never should be placed and left on the skin, unless the therapist is certain they are cool enough not to burn the client. Recently Himalayan Salt stones and Jade Stones have been gain popularity. They don’t stay hot as long, but they provide other benefits.
How is Hot Stone performed, and how does it affect the body?
Hot stones are glided along the client’s body, from head to feet. Sometimes lightly, and other times to assist the therapist to get better pressure into the muscle to alleviate any adhesions. Hot Stones warm an area up so that way it is easier and quicker to get through the various layers of muscle fibers. It allows the therapist to use their time wisely throughout the massage. Additionally, the healing qualities of jade are no myth; in fact, they are scientifically proven to help people dealing with a range of medical issues ranging in severity from a sprained ankle to chronic arthritis. Heated Himalayan Salt Stones have been scientifically proven to emit negative ions, delivering a myriad of health benefits – from higher mental alertness to protection against germs in the air.
What do Hot Stones help with?
They can assist with a variety of things. Tension in your muscles, reduces stress and anxiety, pain relief, increases circulation (although a very small amount), increased joint flexibility, decreasing muscle spasms.
How does Hot Stones feel?
When I get hot stones it feels like heaven, but I adore the heat. Clients have mentioned it feels very comforting and nice, since not your entire body is being enveloped in heat, but just small sections at a time. Those who experience hot flashes really love hot stones since it does not incur a hot flash, for most at least. It truly is a lovely add-on to your massage.
What should I expect after a session?
You should expect to feel relaxed and lighter. Every time I use Hot Stones on a client, they come out floating. You might be able to have a good night’s sleep since it will relax you.
